Wisely Utilize the Present Moment

“Teach us to count our days aright that we may gain wisdom of heart.” Psalm 90:12

When the bombs fell in London during the second World War, you ducked, prayed and if survived, counted your blessings.  Though perhaps the majority of us have never experienced it, none would contest the fact that war is frightfully ugly.  If you survived, how would you react?  Hard to say or imagine what the reality would really be like.

And yet we are at war, with powers and principalities (Ephesians 6:12), spiritual forces of evil, fallen angels and those who cooperate with the dark powers that manifest in our world.  As time goes on, I realize how precious a commodity it is, the fleeting moments given us by God to work out our salvation in fear and trembling.  Too frequently I fail to do either, and waste that gift on unending distractions and diversions.

Still, I want to pass on a particularly valuable insight gained recently as my awareness grows that time is relatively short with death, judgment, heaven or hell imminent.  It is a story about a monk who lived a life of indulgence but still made it to heaven.  (Surprising, as I am one who believes it possible for any of us to end in perdition if we die in mortal sin. If you don’t share that fear, this story will likely leave you unimpressed.)   This is one of the most impressive ideas I’ve read in quite a while.  Maybe nothing new, but still very valuable.
